In The Apostles’ Creed, Ben Myers describes the defining commitments of Christian belief and practice summarized in the ancient creed which was developed to instruct new Christians about their faith as early as 140 C.E. (to put this in perspective, 2 Peter is likely the latest book in the NT canon and was probably written sometime around 110 C.E.). Myers opens the book by saying that “the Christian faith is mysterious not because it is so complicated but because it is so simple” (xv). Myers seeks to offer a simple and clear summary of the Christian faith and its teaching held in common by all Christians.
Vince Bantu, on the other hand, offers a very complicated picture of early Christian “identity politics.” According to Bantu, early Christianity began as a global religious movement, with roots not only in the Western church of Rome and its Hellenized (Greek-influenced) traditions, but also in Africa, the Middle East, and Asia. Bantu argues that the dominance of Western Christian culture and the growth of its political power were not separate from questions of doctrinal “orthodoxy,” and this has led to the erasure and suppression of non-Western Christian identities.
After reading Myers and the assigned selections from Bantu (intro, ch. 1, ONE of the chapters on non-Western Christian origins, whether ch. 2, 3, or 4, and the conclusion), write a 2,000 word paper reflecting on Myers and Bantu. Your paper should address the following two questions:
1. In what way is Christian orthodoxy complicated? For this half I want you to draw from Bantu’s narrative to show how or in what specific ways it complicates Myers’ picture of Christianity. This portion should be around 1,000 words and draw from some details of Bantu’s account. Which parts of Myers exposition of the creed you decide to complicate (e.g., his stuff on Jesus, church, or Mary, for example) is up to you. Which details you decide to use to illustrate your points from Bantu is also entirely up to you. Once you’ve spent 1,000 words with some careful reflections on this question that draw on the two textbooks, you can move on to the second half of the paper…
2. In what way is Christian orthodoxy simple? For this half I want you to draw from Myers’ exposition of the creed to show how it might offer resources to the global church to heal the kind of splintering of Christian traditions and the abuses of power that Bantu describes. This portion of the paper should be around 1,000 words and draw from details of Myers’ exposition to address the problems raised by Bantu’s story. Which aspects of Myers account you decide to focus on is entirely up to you and whether you want to apply it to some specific part of Bantu’s story or his more general critique is also up to you.
