Purpose of the Assignment: On this field trip you will work with a group to determine which of two like-businesses is the best by using a Comparative Decision making process.
The decision making model to use is from Thinker’s Guide to Analytic Thinking (June, 2007).
Format of the Assignment: This Field Trip is a group based activity. You will be placed in a group of 4 or 5 students. You will meet as a group (through Zoom or other types of online meeting rooms) to decide where your Field Trip will take you.
The group will decide on which two organizations they would like to compare. An example could be that your group will decide you will compare Starbucks and Tim Horton’s.
Field Trip location options
· Hotel Fast Food Coffee Shop
· Grocery Store Clothing Store Car Dealers
· Bank Restaurant Other (as approved)
Prior to visiting and using the decision making model complete steps 1 – 4. The key to success is to prepare with as much detail as possible.
GROUP Process
STEP 1: Purpose
· The purpose of your Field Trip is to describe why you are making the comparison. What is it you hope to find out in order to make your decision. The purpose must be specific so the criteria can easily be compared.
· As an example, I could say I will compare ABC restaurant and DEF restaurant and decide which one is best. But, how do I know what the criteria is for “best”? Is it the best furniture? The best parking lot? The longest menu?
· My purpose will be: I will compare ABC and DEF restaurants to determine which is best to take my husband and children, ages 2 and 4.
STEP 2: Determine the questions
· The questions you want to answer while making your decision. In the question section, you spell out your criteria. There should be 5 – 7 questions. Examples:
· Is there a kid-friendly menu?
· Are there tables so a high chair can fit?
STEP 3: Identify your assumptions
· These are the things that you assume because it is a popular way of looking at things. Assumptions may or may not be right. The important thing is to identify them so you will realize the impact they could have on your decision. Ex: I assume I will like Starbucks better than Tim Horton’s because Starbucks has fancier advertising.)
STEP 4: Look at your personal point of view or bias.
· This is looking at your own experiences or biases. Ex: I ate at ABC and sat by a man that was loud and obnoxious. I really did not like the place. Again, they may be right or wrong but it is important to realize the role your bias plays in making a decision.
STEP 5: Data Gathering
· When visiting the two locations or organizations (step 5)
· Gather data that will help you to find answers to your questions. The data will have been spelled out in steps 1 and 2.
· What is my purpose? What am I looking for? What questions must I answer?
STEP 6: Concepts
· Meet with your whole group and share your observations.
· Summarize your findings. Look at steps 3 and 4.
· How have your assumptions or biases been impacted – or how did they impact your experience?
· An easy way to do this is to make a 3 column list of table.
· Column 1: List of criteria/questions
· Column 2: Data from 1 part of the comparison
· Column 3: Date from the other part of the comparison
STEP 7: Conclusion
· Make your conclusion.
· In making a conclusion, go back to the purpose.
· The conclusion will address the purpose based on the process.
GROUP: Presentation
· Oral presentation over Zoom or in classroom
· On Zoom: Presenters must use camera “video on”
· Average 10 min long
· PPT required
· All group members full name at beginning of PPT
· Present all steps 1 – 7 of analytic field trip process
INDIVIDUAL: Writing
Written conclusion submitted into dropbox.
· Conclude by describing your impression of using the analytic decision making model. When would you use it again? What value do you see in this model? Was it valuable to use a group in using the decision model?
