week 2 Assignment Question:

Making use of the Social-Epistemic reading model, how is the worldview presented in the Navajo creation count different from what you understand the Genesis worldview to be? Be sure to explain your understanding of the Navajo worldview before discussing similarities and differences between the two texts. In part four of your paper, reconsider Genesis as creation via arrangement. That is, if God is a great arranger rather than a creator from nothing (as outlined in the Navajo account), what is the moral lesson for human beings? That is, what is the appropriate model of behavior for human beings?

Part 1: Go back and look at your first paper. As you read over it, think about creation as “arrangement.” What does that mean? Where do you see this in the Genesis account? What does Kass say about creation as arrangement? Think about how God arranges things in place (earth, sky, according to their kind) and Time (days). What meaning do you see being revealed in this perspective?

Part two: Look at the Navajo Story, Farella says, likewise, that things are created by placing. Look at the Navajo story. What is placed? How are they placed? Based on your reading of both Farella and Zolbrod, what does the Navajo creation story tell you about the reality we live in? How does this creation story present a different world view than Genesis?

Part three: What do you see as the main difference between the two creation stories? Since you have already written about Genesis, a quick summary will do. I want you to primarily focus on the Navajo creation story here. What surprised you about the Navajo story? Explain what it was. Why is it surprising? What does this opinion tell you about yourself?

Part four: Loop back to the more “ontological” (the study of what it means to be human).
