1. How was the fear of diseases/ contagion reinforced, perpetuated, or normalized in 19th-century society? Did media,pop culture, or social class/norms have anything to do with that?

2.in disease, contagion, and science, there are a lot of diseases and treatments that happened in the 19th century! How was a woman’s desire “treated” medically? How was mental illnesses (especially those of women) diagnosed and treated? How were sexually transmitted diseases spread and handled? Also, you can look at how their fear of “others” (immigrants) and the fear of them spreading disease and other things mirrored our fear of disease. How was medicine and psychology seen as “science” at the time? How did people try to prevent getting illnesses? What kinds of cures or preventatives did they use?

3.Next, do a little more research on your own (no more than 2 outside sources), to explore this fear in greater detail. research an associated phenomenon of the 19th century such as psychological or medical treatments, social trends, and behaviors.

4. Then, use two of the course readings and 2outside sources to support your ideas.
