In 2015 music mogul and entrepreneur Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter immersed himself into the streaming industry is by creating his own streaming platform called Tidal. Carter purchased a small and embattled tech company named Aspiro. Aspiro is a publicly traded stock company under the symbol AB. He would recruit other major artists like Prince, Madonna, Beyoncé, and Rihanna as co-owners to help rebrand the company in an effort to compete with juggernauts like Apple, Spotify, and Google. The service “Tidal: Confidential” is my proposed new feature for the streaming platform. It will permit subscribers to sit in on studio sessions with their favorite artists. The technology would be similar to Facebook’s and Instagram live features, in which the viewers can use a mobile device to receive live/real-time access and interaction with the content creators. Imagine being notified that Beyoncé is working on her next project. Through Tidal: Confidential you can sit in on recording sessions and even offer feedback on her new music. Now the fans can have some direct influence on the music that is made by their favorite singers. People from all over the world enjoy listening to all forms of media entertainment. Because of this it has been a common process for an artist to create a body of work in one country, and then it is shared to people from the other side of the globe. However because of local policies, people from certain countries are banned from indulging in media streaming or media streaming service. China’s President Xi Jinping has made it his objective to restore traditional values and morality into the country’s culture. The Chinese government believes that there is a negative influence being placed on the youth by western culture. The media and government has targeted hip-hop in particular stating “saying that Chinese television “should not feature actors with tattoos (or depict) hip hop culture, sub-culture and immoral culture,”(CNN, 2019). This includes removal of access to social platforms like Google, and Facebook. These restrictions are known as the “Great Firewall of China” or the “Golden Shield Project”. This is a way for the government of China to censor internet content. China is able to do this “Through a combination of firewalls and proxy servers at these gateways, they can analyze and manipulate Internet traffic” (cnbc.com, 2018).
It should also be noted that in the beginning of 2018 China officially banned hip-hop from television and streaming sites. For a streaming company that deals in artistic content it is probable that some of the messages sent out by the artists will be viewed as inappropriate by the Chinese government.
Business Project Teams
A business’s project team usually consist of a various groups of employees’ working unitedly in an effort to achieve a goal. For Tidal’s project team to be successful in overcoming this political challenge there are a couple of elements that should be supplemented in the strategy. The first element is that the project team should be multidimensional. This means that the members of the team are pulled from different technical backgrounds, along with various cultures, genders and age groups. Specifically there should be members of the team that are from Asian/Chinese culture. Also by mixing the age group of the members, you can have the younger members who are more familiar with using social media and various other forms of electronic communication. The older team members can provide expertise in in person and face to face communications.
The next element to be mentioned is virtual communication amongst the team members. Especially in a scenario where it is likely that there will be some forms of collaborating with individuals from overseas. Teleconferencing, videoconferencing and other forms of web based communications are common ways to communicate. As stated previously, this project team will likely consist of team members from different cultures, and countries, etc. These factors make it necessary for the project team to “place a high emphasis on individual responsibilities and on trust, which is a key factor in dealing with language barriers and cultural differences”(small business,2019).
Communication
It is likely that Tidal becomes a victim of negative criticism as a result of the stance the company chooses to take. In preparation for this, it is imperative that a strategic plan is in place that can be used to address any negative media attention the company receives. According to Forbes magazine, leaving negative feedback unaddressed can lead to further scrutiny (Forbes, 2019). The next part of the plan includes embracing the social media platform as a tool. Being in tune with social media presents a few advantages for organizations. It permits a company the capability to monitor a potential crisis as it unfolds in real time. Also allows for instant response to the public to directly address any situation.
Solution
After reviewing the circumstances of the situation Tidal is facing, I believe the best course of action is for the company to become an advocate of the right for free speech “globally’. This campaign will start with the protesting of China’s censorship of internet access, American based music and especially hip-hop culture. Advocating for the people of China to have access to any music of their choice is a fight worth partaking in because it exposes a major violation of the people conducted by the government. Currently there are a number of entities in the country of China who are fighting to remove the restrictions placed by the Chinese government. Tidal should lend the support to these advocates and lobbyist in a effort to remove the ban placed on American music.
Political Influence
Because of these musicians popularity they have been able to forge relationships with activist outside of the industry. In recent history Tidal has been able to rely on these individuals for support in their causes. Very recently two members of Tidal music, Jay-Z and rapper Meek Mill sought to make a change in the laws that were affecting thousands of men and women across the United States. Along with New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft, Philadelphia 76ers owner Michael Rubin, Meek Mill and Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter created a criminal justice reform organization called “Reform” which is “foundation of the Reform Alliance, a new initiative dedicated to changing the “illogical laws that make no sense,” but rule the lives of the estimated 4.5 million Americans currently on parole or probation” (rolling stone, 2019).
Aside from music fans and musicians Tidal may receive support from Chinese officials who believe the country’s internet censorship is having a negative impact on the country’s economical and scientific progress. Lou Fuhe is the vice chairman of ,the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference which is the country’s top advisory to the China rubber stamp parliament which is comparable to the United States House of Congress and Senators. Fuhe believes that internet censorship has caused extremely slow internet speeds which impact research capability. He states “From within China , attempting to visit to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization or a lot of foreign university website is very slow, Opening each page takes at least 10-20 seconds and some foreign university sites need more than half an hour to open”(guardian,2019). Luo states that this is not normal, and he says that he intends to work with scientific researchers to form a legislation that will lift the ban on certain sites.
