· In the upper-left hand corner of the first page, put the following information on separate lines: your name, Mrs. Shue, English 1102, and the date the paper is due. Write the date as Day Month Year. Double space this information.

Content:

· Select one of the topics below

· Write an essay consisting of at least four paragraphs (the essay can have more than four paragraphs)

· Write at least two full pages (approximately 750 words). Your essay may be longer than two pages with four pages as the maximum.

· Turn in a Works Cited page with this paper that contains the short story (stories) that you analyze in your essay and any secondary sources that you use. I will provide the Works Cited entries so that you can copy and paste it onto your Works Cited page.

· You are not required to conduct and incorporate research into this paper. Rely on your own and class discussion analysis. However, if you do elect to incorporate research into your paper, you must accurately document it and include the source on the Works Cited page, all according to MLA style. Failure to document accurately and include the source on the Works Cited page is plagiarism, which results in an F on the paper. You do not need to document anything that comes from our class discussions.

· You do need MLA parenthetical citations for any quotes you have from a short story. See information under Reminders below.

· Turn in a new essay, not a paper or a portion of a paper that you wrote for another class or got off of the Internet.

Reminders:

· When you write about literature, use present tense.

Ex. Dee’s selfishness appears (not appeared) when she demands (not demanded) the quilts from Mama.

· When you quote from a story, at the end of the sentence containing the quote, put in parentheses the author’s last name and the page number (if available) of the quote. If no page numbers are available, use only the author’s last name in the citations. Note that the period comes after the second parenthesis.

Ex. Monsieur and Madame Loisel willingly take on a very hard existence, “and this life lasted for ten years” (Maupassant ).

· When you type a quote and it is longer than four lines, treat the quote as a block quote. Begin the quote on a new line and hit the tab key twice. Indent the entire long quote in this manner. Do not use quotation marks around a long quote. At the end of the quote, put a period and then the page number in parentheses. This quote is double-spaced just as the rest of your paper is.

· Titles of short stories go in quotation marks.

Ex. “The Lottery” is a horrifying story.

· Most importantly, make sure you don’t simply summarize the work. You need to analyze it. Assume your essay’s reader has already read the story.

· Topics—You must write about one of the assigned short stories.

1. Select a main character from one of the stories we’ve read. Analyze two or more conflicts (person vs. ____) that the protagonist faces in the story.

2. Select the point-of-view from one of the stories we read and explain how that point of view is important to understanding the story.

3. Select one of the stories we read and explain how the setting is important to understanding the story. Many stories contain more than one setting. The paper can address all the settings in the story.

4. Select a protagonist from one of the assigned stories. Explain whether that protagonist is round or flat. What leads you to this conclusion?

5. Discuss the theme of one of the short stories and explore how this theme is portrayed.

6. Discuss the role that duplicity plays in one of the assigned stories. You may focus on how one character tricks another or how the story tricks readers

7. Select a character from two different literary works. Analyze how they are similar.

8. Select two characters from the same literary work and explain how they are similar.

9. Select a character from two different literary works. Analyze how they are different.

10. Select two characters from the same literary work and analyze how they are different.

11. Explore the ways that one character is isolated.

12. Analyze the different views of heritage that Mama and Dee have.
